“I remember thinking that nobody had the right to control music”

This is a line from the fictional version of Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, in Netflix’s new show

, which charts the dramatic rise of Spotify from plucky start-up into the behemoth it is today.

While initially heralded, Spotify and other streaming services are now accused of doing the very thing they said they wouldn’t - controlling music.

But what the show brilliantly demonstrates and is easy to forget, is that Spotify’s emergence came about as a solution to the trend of bootleg songs, albums and performances being downloaded for free at large scale across Pirate Bay, Napster and Limewire.

The poor economics around streaming now are well known - with artists needing anywhere from 75,000 to 700,000 streams of a song just to earn $1000. As a result, many understandably claim that streaming is a major problem for artists, arguing it devalues music and makes it difficult for artists to make a living.

While not wrong, it's important to recognise that streaming was a response to a changing market dynamic, not the catalyst for it. The rise of streaming platforms was a result of the widespread availability of illegal downloads and high-speed internet in the early 2000s. These changes in technology and consumer behaviour led to a shift in how people consume music, and streaming was simply a response to this shift. Not the cause of it.


And while there’s been repeated calls to improve the economics for artists, It also bears mentioning that Spotify, though the global market leader in music streaming, has yet to turn a profit. 

To play devil’s advocate further, unlike the pirates the streaming giants offer a transparent business that the industry can work with, while also respecting copyright regulations and allowing artists to reach a global audience and grow their fan base.

This reality means most artists will have to adapt and take advantage of the opportunities provided by streaming, while looking outside for the ability to generate a self-sustaining income.

Enter Web3, and its familiar poster child - NFTs.

NFTs can be looked at much like a digital version of vinyl, an add-on to an album or single release that generates better returns for the artists while fostering a stronger sense of belonging and fandom from music lovers. 

Much like vinyl, where 100 sales equal the same returns for an artist as 450,000 streams, NFTs provide a more direct channel for artists to earn an extra income stream while strengthening their connection with fans. Don’t believe us? Here’s a couple quotes from independent artists we know:

“I earned more in an afternoon from my first NFT drop than I had in 5 years of playing and releasing music.” - Swaré.

“I released a song in 2020 that now has 800,000 streams, which earned me around $3000. It cost me $1500 to record and release it, so I made $1500 in 2 years, but when I put the track out as a digital collectible, I made that amount in a week and could immediately fund my next song.

“I focus on my top fans who buy most of my NFTs. I have 4 million plays on Spotify and I have no idea who is listening. I have built a community through my NFTs. Now if I am doing a show in their town I can message them and say 'Hey I'm doing a show, bring some mates.” - High Tropics.

Web3 doesn’t end at NFTs, with more opportunities emerging to earn and connect as technology develops and more people embrace Web3 tech that enables things like our 

 product and the metaverse. Already we’ve seen more than 12 million people watch Travis Scott’s live performance in Fortnite.

Web3 might mean artists need to provide additional value to their fans in order to stand out and succeed. This could be in the form of unique and engaging experiences for fans, such as special concerts in a virtual world, or attaching VIP packages as an add-on to their NFTs. Understandably it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but those that accept there’s a new industry and playbook emerging within music and embrace Web3 will benefit most.

Much like streaming services were a response to a changing market, Web3 heralds a new era in the economics of the music industry, as well as a change in distribution and promotion.

But this time, the artists are the ones in control.

The game-changing technology behind Borderless Music is called Telemidi and has developed into a major pillar behind our virtual performance spaces. With the ability for musicians to remotely connect and perform together, the possibilities for this technology include remote writing rooms where artists from across the globe can compose music together, DJs from across the globe playing back to back sets, artists between London, Vancouver and Perth performing together all in perfect synchronisation and in real time. We publicly demonstrated the technology at Strings Attached on October 9th in Margaret River with a seamless performance between Matt Bray in Perth and Bernardo Varela in London. Designed for the fan as much for the artist, we are reimagining what active consumption of a music performance looks like, with mobile connectivity anyone anywhere can interact and even play along with their favourite artist.

We have been spreading the Ocean Floor Music news across the globe presenting on panels, sponsoring and networking with representation at Big Sound, an incredibly engaged panel at Australian Crypto Convention and performing Borderless Music and hosting a panel at Strings Attached. MUSIC NFTs & THE GODFATHER OF DANCE: OFM KEEPS BUILDING THROUGH THE WINTER

Ocean Floor Music has the potential to disrupt the music industry for the better, Illuvium CFO Danny Wilson says.

Speaking with Ocean Floor Music’s Finance and Crypto Analyst, Sophie Amat, Danny revealed what first attracted him to join the project as an advisor.

“It was a match made in heaven, it just made a lot of sense for this vision that Clint and Sam had for such a long time in this music space on how to redefine this whole space,” Danny said.

On finalising this partnership, we will work to list our token and drive a growing and stable token price over the next 12-24 months.

As we are 3 months into the bear market, our timing is crucial and our financial and Web3 advisors are suggesting we prepare to launch for the next wave up. This is in the best interest of everyone reading this email as the macro economic environment is still uncertain. We have heard many industry experts say we are at the bottom but there may be more turbulence, however it has been a few weeks of positive momentum.

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR OCEAN FLOOR MUSIC

Ocean Floor Music continues to build and hit milestones despite volatility in the world and crypto markets.

We would like to take a holistic approach to this article and try to tease out what is happening in the world before we get into the goodness of Ocean Floor Music.


It has been an interesting, challenging and sometimes scary period in the world of late. Beginning with the ongoing situations like the Ukraine-Russian war, interest rates and the dominating narrative of recession, property prices, a crashing stock market, resurging Covid cases, China, Taiwan, food security, water security, energy prices, environmental disaster, humanitarian disasters, mental health concerns and of course, the volatile crypto market. What this shows is that crypto is now tied to the wider market, which means wider adoption has occurred, it also means we are intrinsically aligned to the ups and downs of the wider market.


If we look at the world news we are fed from the media, it’s no wonder we are all wondering what’s next and how much worse can it get. It may get worse before it gets better, we haven’t seen this kind of volatility and fear for many years. So, let’s batten down and prepare for the ride. A few weeks ago, a Live Virtual Performance between our Matt Bray in Perth, Western Australia, and a collaborator in London 25,000km away was performed in realtime in our Virtual Performance Environment.


Matt Bray has developed the process of Telemidi as part of his PhD research at WAAPA in Perth, Australia. This technology has gained a lot of interest and already Warner Chappel has approached us for writing rooms, some big name DJ’s want to perform remote Back to Back DJ sets. It’s an early prototype but we think we are looking at ‘the Future if remote Music Collaborations and Performance' allowing the OFM Metaverse to facilitate;

Our team is very positive and advice is to stay the course. We realise that for many of you this might be one of your first experiences in a volatile crypto market and it’s OK to be feeling a little worried, this is not the first time and won’t be the last. The 2018 crypto winter lasted a year and at the time sceptics said crypto is dead and that it was all a scam. The big difference now is the narrative around the crypto bear market is because of macro circumstances such as the war, inflation and interest rates. The entire market is down and although we still have sceptics and some way to go before the upside - blockchain, crypto and Web3 adoption is widespread and here to stay.

Since the last bear market we have seen a massive increase in investment and development, we have amazing protocols that will change how banking, insurance, education, creation, ownership and all facets of digital assets and economy will be managed in the future, and governments are serious about regulation. Has there been some failures, yes, are we learning? YES, every failure is the opportunity to improve and one thing that this space is very good at, is sharing of information through its open ledgers, permissionless, intermediar-less and peer-to-peer networks.

A WORD FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR MUSIC FOUNDERS

If I was to say money speaks louder than words, this article would be about the volatility of cryptocurrencies.  

From the highs of watching powerhouse VC’s such as Andreesen Horowitz release $4.5 billion in the ‘Golden Era of Web3’, to the unpegging of Luna/Terra and the recent plummet of Bitcoin below $20,000.

And given the media’s laser focus on the recent downturn in crypto markets, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about the havoc also present in TradFi markets as the global economy teeters and warnings of a potential recession grow louder.

In a recent interview, New York Mayor Eric Adams spoke of receiving his first three pay cheques in cryptocurrency, a move made to demonstrate to his city that crypto is the future. While current market conditions mean Adams hasn’t yet netted the equivalent of his salary in USD, he is curious why that has been the focus of the media rather than the $100,000 his stock holdings have lost in value over the same period.

Why the mainstream media insists on oversimplifying all the goings on across countless projects in the Web3 space down to one word - ‘cryptocurrency’ - was the first topic addressed when I arrived in Miami at the Permissionless Blockchain conference, hosted by Blockworks and Bankless, just two days after the Luna/Terra crash. We discussed how it was easier to do if you don’t understand the opportunities that blockchain technologies provide - things like the 

: and Creator Economy, the future of Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) - or haven’t witnessed the army of trailblazing developers, founders, crypto VCs, and exchanges that are building a better future for us all.

Seated among more than 2,000 attendees at the main stage on day one after 40 hours travelling from Perth, there was a vibration of pride and a commitment to keep building. Web3 wasn’t a new topic that needed to be explained to anyone, it was a symbiotic relationship of building a new future of ownership and creator economies. 

Discussing how the next 1 billion users will enter Web3 and what will bring in this next wave allowed the audience to connect their protocols to this larger vision in some way. There were insights into Decentralised Social Economies (DeSoc) , where we witnessed the launch of lens.xyz, and further understood why Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin is focusing on this area with his new project,

The overriding message was to build systems for people that will help ‘inform’ them to make the right decisions, and ‘empower’ where their lives go. To make sure these systems 

, that they can be used anywhere at any time, can exit with ease, are ‘

, and to move away from tech lingo so they’re easy to understand and use. Metamask has grown from 200,000 users to more than 30 million in just two years with an emphasis on this type of thinking.

Self-made billionaire and Australian success story, Kaine Warwick, Founder of Synthetix, noted that we have probably been in a DeFi bear market for the past 18 months and shared his excitement around the new wave of NFTs in music and movies. Chris Dixon from a16z.com referred to the ‘

 report which demonstrated the revenue opportunities for creators in Web3:  

“We counted 22,400 Web3 creators (based on the number of NFT collections) compared to the nearly 3 billion users posting content on Meta platforms. While in absolute terms, 

 paid out more to creators – $7 billion and $15 billion, respectively – the “per capita” disparity is striking. According to our analysis, Web3 paid out $174,000 per creator, while Meta paid out $0.10 per user, Spotify paid out $636 per artist, and YouTube paid out $405 per channel. Web3 is tiny but mighty.” 

It was pleasing to see so many female leaders and game changers throughout the event. Porting between her roles and presentations as COO for Gala Games and CEO for Gala Music, Sarah Buxton announced that she still has $600 million to invest into her gaming portfolio for 2022 and that the future of music is already here. She will stop at nothing to help drive this forward and should be admired for her vision and commitment to do so. Informative fireside chats with Kate Rouch, CMO at Coinbase, who launched 

 at the Superbowl this year, Avery Akkeneni, President of VaynerNFT, driving NFT Marketing Strategies, and Evin McMullen, CEO of Disco.xyz with her vision of private verifiable data, were demonstrations of wisdom and inspiration.

So, what’s next? With lots of layer 2 solutions landing, notably Immutable X and Optimism, as well as the long-awaited merge of ETH 2, there is excitement around this deployment of more eco-friendly solutions coming to blockchain. Very soon we will also see the next horizon of gaming platforms that have been in development over the past 1-3 years launching in the back half of 2022. 

Watching the likes of Illuvium build out the final stages of their game with input from their community, really demonstrates the future of business. Not only having voting power on the game development or some future business decisions as part of a DAO, but understanding that their community of staked contributors also receive a passive income is impressive. I'm sure this realisation will become conscious on the back of their most recent $72 million land sale once it transcends into staked token holder wallets. 

This also reminds us that there is a new way to ‘Earn, Create and Own’ in Web3. OFM BECOMES A MEMBER OF BLOCKCHAIN AUSTRALIA

Brand is perception: an intangible concept, a set of beliefs that identify an organisation, product or individual. 

Brand communicates personality, a set of values, the mission and vision. Logo, tag line, tone of voice, colour and typographic choices are identifiers that together form the brand’s identity.

The aim of any company, especially a startup in a cutting-edge space like Web3, is to create a brand identity that sets them apart from the competition. At Ocean Floor Music we believe that communicating our brand message in a compelling, authentic way to our community is what sets us apart: helping artists to understand and create value in Web3.


Communicating authentically and relatably is particularly important in a crypto market dominated by tech-heavy branding that can often feel cold and esoteric. If our mission is to help artists create music in this new space our brand identity needs to reflect that.

So what does creativity look like? The creative process is a little harder to explain than branding. Often instinctive, it relies on imagination, vulnerability, experience, patience, craft, technical ability, improvisation. Oh, and a large serving of bravery. These are prerequisites, must-have qualities to get the job done, but not the focus we’re looking to visualise. The results of that creative process are the qualities our branding and design team felt should represent the Ocean Floor Music brand: beauty, tension, harmony, discord, vibrancy, colour, texture, movement, energy, power, joy.


So how do you go about visualising these emotive qualities? Yesterday the Ocean Floor Music team headed down to Chris Huzzard Studios in East Perth to do just that.

Ocean Floor Music’s Richard Keenan (Head of Design) gave local image-maker 

 the creative brief to photograph artists in the process of creating music, capturing the qualities mentioned above. There was a caveat - we didn’t want any of the artists to be identifiable as this would shift the focus away from creativity on to identity. Austy had the answer: a photographic technique he had previously used with local band 

 where in-camera motion blur combines with strong coloured, directional lighting on the subjects. 

Austy explains: “On the shoot we used high contrast RGB lights with a slow shutter speed to give the images lots of movement and energy. This style of shooting is really fun as I feel it has a certain futuristic look you can’t quite put your finger on.”

So who would form the talent base for the shoot? As our community is our top priority, it was only natural to call up local musicians and creators to feature in our first brand shoot. A diverse range of talent, looks and music styles were represented. Eight musos, ranging from drummer, to rapper, saxophonist to DJ came down to the studio and brought the tools of their trade to feature in the final images: drums, drumsticks, congas, tambourines, microphones, headphones, decks, saxophones, flutes - even a VR headset. Colour gels and fluro lights in the Ocean Floor Music brand palette gave each artist a different, distinctive look. 

Our photographer Austy found working with real musicians vital: 

”Using musicians was super important for the shoot as it needed to have that same feeling and energy as a live music show. Everyone was amazing to work with. They all brought such expert insight and lifted the creative process up to feel hugely collaborative.”


The studio was indeed buzzing with creativity and energy as our artists showcased their talents on set. Bassist and guitarist 

 of bands Racka Chachi and Witchy Djypsies, was surprised and energised: “The shoot was really fun. The Ocean Floor Music team was very welcoming and the set was super relaxed but upbeat. The vibe felt really authentic as we were all musicians doing the shoot. I know the photographer too which made it feel natural and relaxed.”

On Ocean Floor Music’s mission Dennis wanted to know more: 

“It (Ocean Floor Music) sounds like something I want to be a part of. Very exciting. I’d like assistance in getting started. I don’t know anything about the Web3 space and would like some education from Ocean Floor Music.”

was also impressed with the experience: “It was a different, fun way to do a shoot. I had a great time.” On Ocean Floor Music: “It’s a unique, different, exciting angle on the music funding space. Ocean Floor Music seems different to what everyone else is doing. I’m really keen to learn more.”

Austy agreed with Dennis and Alannah: “OFM is really exciting for me as a creator. I think it’s going to really change the way we go about this hugely important side of the music industry. Being able to come to artists with a plan on how we can raise funds for shoots instead of having to pull it out of their own pockets is exciting and will change the game completely.”

Hank Gidney, Head of Brand at Ocean Floor Music, expands on how the photoshoot marked a new phase in the brand evolution of Ocean Floor Music:

“Ocean Floor Music encapsulates possibilities and better outcomes for the music industry and its supporters. The brand creates energy and exudes positivity and at its core will educate and nurture creatives to realise alternate revenues outside of current conventional models: essentially how to understand, navigate and create value in Web3.

He continues: "The OFM brand shoot brought all of these elements together: energy, vitality; a sense of fun and togetherness; colour and movement; the blurring of boundaries; the passion, freedom and power of creation.

Each artist was encouraged to be in their moment, to be free to feel the energy and to express themselves. This alignment of artists and Ocean Floor Music generated the emotive space that creates the environment that our business is building: energy, vitality and possibility.

We aim to break long held traditions that have hindered and withheld potential and open doors to new horizons. The shoot was the culmination of all of these: freedom, passion and vibrancy. OFM PRESENT AT AUSTRALIAN BLOCKCHAIN WEEK

The Ocean Floor Music blockchain music ecosystem aims to put artists at the top of the value chain.

The life of an artist has never been a certain one, and that is particularly true in the music industry.

Put bluntly, the music industry has never made more money. Globally, music revenue topped $77B in 2019, with projections by Goldman Sachs of $140B+ by 2030. And whilst there certainly is a lot of money to go around, it’s sadly ironic that today 90% of artists have never been paid less!

Now add in a global pandemic robbing these same artists of the ability to gig and tour, and you have the recipe for a crisis. A perfect storm that has led to financial instability that, in turn, has negatively impacted the wellbeing of musicians around the world.

But where some see a glass half empty, others see one that is half full. And out of darkness, groundbreaking ideas can emerge. Ocean Floor Music is one such concept. Who’s entire reason-for-being is to help artists earn income solely from their music.

Clint Arthur, a musician/marketer/executive, is the co-founder of Ocean Floor Music (OFM), a new venture seeking to turn the music industry’s financial model around and put artists first. With business partner, musician/producer/educator Sam Cutri, they want to take artists from the bottom of the value chain to the top.

Both Arthur and Cutri have their own experiences as musicians. Arthur spent seven years (and hundreds of gigs) with his band, Liquid Memory, in Melbourne. They eventually released an album but by that time, their energy was spent, and with income increasingly a focus, he entered the corporate world and worked across Australia, then Hong Kong and China over 16 years.

Cutri had already played in a number of bands when at the age of 18, he was signed to EMI Music with a band called ICU. He moved to Byron Bay and took up work at the world-renowned Rocking Horse Studios, his apprenticeship in music production. Just as it seemed ICU was about to launch internationally, the late ’90s financial crisis hit and wiped the floor with them.

Cutri, however, not only continued to make music back in Perth but helped build Loop Studios and founded two labels (Wax Trax and Nefarious Music) before going on to become a Senior Lecturer at WAAPA and later the School of Audio Engineering (SAE).

Arthur and Cutri met by chance in early 2021 and soon realised they had a common purpose, both having excelled in their careers but wanting to find a different way to continue in music in a way that gave back to artists.

“What we found was a real-life problem,” says Cutri, “and we’ve found a real-life solution for it.”

That “solution” is a community owned-and-run music creation, project funding and rewards platform. This music ecosystem is not run by highly-paid managers or a faceless board but by the very community it serves. And there’s a name for this type of organisation — A DAO. A Decentralised Autonomous Organisation.
